如何区分than和then

（01）用than来表示比较的意义，当你将一个名词（东西、人、地方或概念）在各种方面与另一个相比较时，就用than。例句1：There are moreonionsthanscallions in yourfridge.冰箱里的洋葱比青葱多。例句2：Scott was sickerthanadoglast week.上周斯科特简直比狗还虚弱。

（02）用then来表示时间先后顺序。例句1：First there were four, andthenthere were two. 首先有四个，然后变成两个了。Wash the clothes,thenput them in thedryer.先洗衣服，然后再放到烘干机里。

（03）两个词的发音稍有不同。than和then都有滑元音，并且相似。从语音学的角度来讲，英语为母语的人喜欢发ǝ这一非中央原因，就像口腔放松时发出的声音"eh"一样，因为这样更方便，也能让语流过渡更快更自然。但结果就是，很多"a"和"e"的音就越难区分开了。发Than的时候，口腔打得更开，舌头置于底部顶住下齿。从口腔后部和喉咙发出来的元音会稍微有被阻挡的感觉。发Then的时候嘴张开一半就行，发音时喉咙和舌头都处于放松状态。

（04）检测你的使用情况，在造句的时候问问自己这些问题。用next代替then，检验句子是否有意义？I will go to the store next是我接下来去商店的意思，所以这里可以用then：I will go to the store then.I likeapplesbetter nextpapayas这句话语义不通，所以应该使用than：I like apples betterthanpapayas.（比起木瓜我更喜欢苹果。）用in comparison to 来代替than，看看句子通不通。句子It costs more in comparison to anew car的语意通顺，意思是这比买辆新车钱花得更多，所以可以用than：It costs more than a new car.而这个句子You'll never guess what happened to me in comparison to却讲不通，所以你可能要用到then：You'll never guess what happened to methen!（你永远猜不到当时发生了什么。）

更简单的记忆方法是，then是表时间的，所以和when一样元音是e。

另一种记忆方法是then和when都有e，而than和comparison都有a。
